Definition

Relics of historical land division and arable farming methods on slopes; originated from the interaction of plowing parallel to the slope and valley-side soil erosion; alternatively, they were created locally by shifting the soil in order to prevent soil erosion

Characteristic

  • Stair-like or jump-like, strip-like terrain steps / leveling on slopes (so-called "Rangen", "Stufenraine"; partly with Lesesteinwällen, Trockenmauern or Wallhecken solidified and delimited); usually running parallel to the contour lines
  • High historical testimony value, great importance for shaping the landscape, high value for ecological diversity
